HOW MUCH EXTRA BUSINESS COULD A CHARGER CREATE?
Electric cars are rapidly becoming more common and their range is constantly increasing to allow more cars to tour long distance. Installing an electric vehicle (EV) charger affords the opportunity to grow with this trend. In many areas, it is still early enough to be the only hotel offering this service. We have seen a 3% to 12% reduction in hotel vacancy levels as a result of attracting this segment of EV drivers. Hotels are starting to see the benefits of installing EV chargers and are rapidly meeting the increasing demand.

The percentage of electric cars is growing rapidly and is forecasted to be over 50% of the total cars sold in 2040. Some types of electric cars that will be looking to charge at hotels are Tesla, Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Fiat 500e, Ford Focus Electric, Hyundai IONIQ Electric, Kia Soul EV, Mercedes B250e, and Volkswagen e-Golf among others. At this time, the Tesla has the longest range and is therefore the most likely car to be touring and searching for hotels.
WHY WOULD ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS SEEK OUT HOTELS WITH CHARGERS?
Electric cars have limited range and need to be charged very 80 to 300 miles. Electric car batteries perform better long term when they are plugged in to maintain their charge and charged at a slow rate. As hotel guests stay overnight, charging slowly for 8 hours is the perfect solution. Additionally, at colder temperatures, the battery charges at a slower rate making the hotel solution even more attractive. EV drivers appreciate the potential to eliminate stops and wasted time to charge at other locations during their trip. Hotel charging closely matches the way EV drivers charge their car at their homes.
